Simmering on RTVW
I am really urinated off and it just keeps simmering! The other place has gotten my goat this time.
I have batts’ username on MSN Messenger and we keep in touch by chatting about once a week. * shout out to batts * I know he lurks here! So, Friday night we were chatting and I started talking about the upcoming season of TAR. Batts said he would watch and was looking forward to it.
Saturday morning I get up and start checking all my emails and red wavy flag thingies to find that batts had sent me a flaggy. Batts told me there was a thresd about the upcoming participants and someone had posted a pic of a couple and mentioned me in the text. The poster wanted my input.
I scurried off to the TAR forums all excited about the thresd because I hadn’t been to them since last season. So, as I am reading the thresd I come across a post by someone that reads, “I think, despite their queer-looking team photos, that Eric and Jeremy are alpha males.”
Well, how the fuck does one manage to “look” queer? Seriously, I didn’t see the “666” tattooed on their forehead nor were they wearing shirts that read, “FAG”! Also, I don’t know how anyone can tell just by looks if someone is an alpha male.
So, I alerted the thresd to say that I was offended that one would use those words to describe others. There have been no responses directly to me to explain the usage of the words nor has anything been done to that thresd. The person that posted those words has answered other posts but refuses to give me a response where I questioned what was meant by “queer-looking”.
URGH! Saddens me while also making me so mad I want scratch out someone’s eyes.

I know it's frustrating. One thing I am learning over there in the show forums is that a lot of these peeps aren't going to stick around and so it's not worth getting upset. If i know they are going to be repeat offenders I am more apt to get upset. Batts PMed me about that thread too because of a remark made about lipstick lesbians. That in itself isn't an insult but yes the queer looking comment is an insult.
There should have been a mention by one of the mods though. Hang in there.

The thing that upsets me even more is that I DID alert it and have heard nothing. I voiced that I was offended and think it would be something that if the mods were not going to lock the thresd they could at least explain to me why nothing was said or done. URGH!

I saw that whole thing too and have wondered why it hasn't been addressed yet! It's really sad that people are so ignorant.
Did you try a PM to a mod besides the alert? I have no idea where those alerts go, but a PM may get more attention.

When you figure out how a queer or straight person looks will you let me know? I sure couldn't tell the difference and didn't know there is a difference. Why does the people you are attracted to have to define you? That is so stupid. There is really some ignorant people out there.

Well I'm going to watch the entire season this time so I visited, took a look at the contestants and printed a summary of each. I saw the comments too and, in my head, I just thought "More gay bashing freakizoids"! They are out there, as are the biggots, and I can't take them all on. I know that it is more sensitive to you, but damn 'em. These people keep breeding. Like I tell my boys when another of their asshat friends get preggers - Stop the breeding of asshats!!!

Doc, you should remember that it can take a while for the mods to do something. Can you imagine how many alerts/pm's they get?
There will always be ignorant peeps posting over there.
My real concern is why is Batts pm'ing you and Carey to point out these gay bashers?

Nookie, I alerted two threads sunday for spam and within 2 hours they were completely deleted from their forums. I think three days is plenty of time for something like this to be address.
I can't speak for batts but for me it is more of "hey, do you have my back if I go in here and I am not alone" type situation. I would rather know there are others aware of the situation and would watch to see if they could express their feelings better than I if need be.
For instance, if I see something that offends me dealing with gay issues and HD has posted or is in discussion with the poster...I don't have to worry about points being made because HD is far better at expressing thoughts on the issue than I. HD is someone that want to be aware of things like this because he can get his points across so well.
I think batts was just trying to make sure there were people there to address the issues with the idiots that were making the statements.
Another thing that really bothered me about the posts is that the thresd is DAYS old and not one single "regular" poster and/or "older person" jumped in to say anything about the use of the language.

3 days is a long time. I wouldn't be upset about regular posters not jumping in though. The show hasn't started so perhaps most regulars haven't checked that forum. also, aren't the rules that you should just alert the offending post and not have everyone adding their 2 cents?

Moment of honesty ahead:
I used to say (and sometimes it still slips) "that's really gay" fairly often. I have (*thinks*) no openly gay friends outside of RTVW, so I never thought about how it could be considered derogatory. I do now.
While I don't know if I'd equate "that's really gay" and "they look queer" comment, I can defend a person to a certain extent for saying it, without realizing it's derogatory. I think it's fair to say to the poster, "hey, that's a offensive to say someone looks queer. It's like saying someone looks like a racist."
I absolutely think the mods should have said something if you alterted the post. I never get a reply back if I alert something, but I do expect to see it addressed in the thread, or if they don't find the content objectionalbe, to let me know why.
If I were you, I'd PM a mod. First ask for an explanation on why no action has been taken. Then, if the answer is not satisfactory, you can get pissed at them. I'd be happy to join you email campaign if the mod doesn't have a good reason for not doing anything about it.
I first always give people the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes I find I shouldn't have. Sometimes, I'm glad I did.

Yeah, it continues to urinate me off too, Vols. It still has not been addressed. That was a contributing factor to my online funk. Too much ignorance. I needed a break.
